Avocado Bed Review

Avocado mattress is one of a few innerspring mattresses that is all natural.  In my opinion one of the best built as well.  Using good foams, a solid coil system and it’s also button tufted.  Its built like a tank and you can tell the moment you see it and feel the heaviness of it.  You can also choose between the classic or a euro top which will be the thicker and softer of the two.

A few Noticeable benefits:

  • NATURAL MATERIALS
  • PRESSURE-POINT SUPPORT
  • NO POLYURETHANE FOAMS
  • NO TOXIC CHEMICALS
  • HANDMADE IN CALIFORNIA
  • AVAILABLE 0% APR
  • FREE SHIPPING & RETURNS
  • 100 NIGHT TRIAL

GREEN IS OUR PASSION

“Avocado Green Mattresses are designed in Hoboken, NJ, and handmade to order in sunny California with only the finest natural, organic and non-toxic materials. Our mission is to be the most respected source for organic mattresses and pillows at affordable prices — while maintaining environmentally conscious, ethical and sustainable business practices — to help safeguard your health and protect our planet.”

You will like this if you:

  • Are looking for an all natural/organic – the Avocado is a healthy, clean choice and one of the best built natural mattresses we have reviewed so far.

  • Like to sleep cool – Generally latex sleeps the coolest.  Then you add in that it’s aerated and uses a coil system rather than a foam core it all helps with air circulation.  You don’t have an over whelming amount of body either so so more of your body is exposed to the air which helps to stay cooler.  I did not experiece excessive heat at all.

  • You want a good value – Sometimes the natural and organic mattresses get really pricey.  This is an honest, good price for the quality of build and materials that are uses.  The pillowotp is a little pricier but its still a good deal for being organic.

  • Sleep in multiple positions – This mattress is a good medium feel with good body conformance.  Sleeping on your side, back or stomach Avocado will conform to your body very well.  As with most latex mattresses I can see some people thinking its a little on the firmer side but that’s typical with latex foam.

  • Are a heavier sleeper – This mattress is one of my top picks for heavier sleepers.  Its thick, and built like a tank.  Additionally latex is one of the most resilient foams that will last for a long time with minimal sag.

  • Like the combo of bounce and body conformance – With the latex & coils it maintains good bounce which makes it easier to adjust positions and not feel stuck.

You might not like this if you:

  • Prefer a non-latex feel– The Avocado mattress has a true latex feel.  SO not as much sinkage or hug as say a memory foam provides.  It’s also a little on the firmer side of medium.

  • Want a foam bed – If you know you want a foam mattress you should look elsewhere. The Avocado is a comfortable mattress but it won’t probably transform you from a foam fan to a spring fan.

Avocado Mattress off gassing

The first thing you will do when you get your Avocado mattress is bring it to the room you will open it in.  You do not want to unroll it in another room.  Once you are ready to open it you can use the cutter some brands provide, if not use a scissors and be careful not to cut the fabric.

As it starts opening it will expand quickly and you will only notice a slight “new mattress smell”.  The Avocado mattress is made in the USA so it is not roll packed very long, which helps with minimize off gassing.

This is a Natural mattress and will not have chemicals used in the manufacturing.

“Off Gassing” for me is tricky because no matter what brand you are looking at they are going to have a smell.  “Natural” or Organic” mattresses often times have the strongest smell, even though people associate them with no off gassing.  A smell is normal and no matter what brand you buy is going to have some kind of new smell.  You will notice a rubber/latex smell.

In most cases the smell will be gone within 12-36 hours or very faint.  I always recommend using a mattress protector so once the mattress airs out use a protector and sheets and at that point you should not experience much smell at all.

Avocado Mattress Construction

We reviewed the Eurotop (pillowtop) version.

4″ Comfort Layer – This layer is 2″ of softer natural Dunlop latex designed to provide comfort and responsiveness to the mattress.  The Standard version will have 2″ instead of 5″

  • 1″ Transition Layer – This layer is 1″ of firmer Dunlop latex which provides support and transition between the upper comfort layer and the coil support layer.
  • 8″ Foundation Layer – This layer is 8″ of pocketed innerspring coils (up to 1303 in the largest mattress) that provides the underlying support to the mattress.  The mattress is zoned for comfort with 3 distinct areas to provide support where it is needed the most.

Elegant Cover

Certified Organic Cotton Cover

It is a breathable GOTS-certified organic cotton / poly-blend 4-way stretch-knit (rather than a traditional weave) in a soft, natural color. Sourced from the United States, this durable textile is button-tufted by hand with wool yarn rosettes, which secure the cotton ticking and internal mattress layers firmly in place without the use of chemical adhesives. They also use hand-stitched tape edges (double stitched) and heavy-duty upholstered handles.

Durable Foundation

The Avocado mattress will perform great on any solid surface.  A regular wood foundation or boxspring, slats, or even the floor.

It will work on an adjustable base as well.  Although I would recommend the 11″ option for this.  But if you just want to elevate a little the thicker option should be fine.

His and Hers – Firmness and Feel:

My thoughts (Ross)

Standard Bed: Gentle Firm
Mattress with Pillow-Top: Luxury Plush  |  Featuring a Euro-Style Button-Tufted Pillow Top

I felt like this is one of the best built mattresses we have tried and especially for the organic market.  Generally to even have button tufting you are looking at high end mattresses.  The only ones I sell at my store that use it are my top 3 mattresses or 40 options.  SO that’s a high end touch that helps with longevity.

Overall, we have a good experience on the Avocado mattress.  The latex felt great and had good body conformance while still maintaining the great bounce latex provides.  I also like that it uses a pocketed coil system rather than a foam core.  This was the 1st organic innerspring we have tried and I think it helps a lot with cooling, support and bounce compared to if this was just solid latex all the way through.

Her thoughts (Kayla)

This Avocado mattress review is one of the few that I am very excited to share about.

My first lay on the mattress I thought it was a little firm, but like Ross always says its good to start firmer since they get softer once broken in.  I am also lighter at 125lbs.  The top latex layer supports your lower back very well and bounces back quickly if you adjust positions.  I’m always worried about motion transfer since Ross moves around a lot.  The combo of latex and pocketed coils helped the Avocado minimize motion transfer.  I have never considered what goes into making a mattress.  Although I don’t think people need to worry about their mattress being “toxic” it was a nice feeling knowing this is organic and less harmful to the environment to manufacture.  Overall, you can tell that this is built with superior products and built to last with button tufting as an added feature.

Standard Option-Firmness level: 7.5
Pillowtop Option-Firmness level: 6.5

Temperature:

The Avocado mattress had no issues with heat.  Generally latex is one of the coolest foams and is aerated to hep with air flow.  In addition Avocado uses a coil system rather than a foam core., which also helps with airflow. You can really tell if a mattress keeps heat in when you get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom or something and come back to lay in the same spot. If you’re mattress is trapping heat you will noticably feel the heat after laying back down. It is normal to feel some warmth on even the best mattress as they are not air conditioned and our bodies are warm, but it should not feel like a heat pad. I never experienced any excessive heat in those instances where I left the mattress mid night.

Adjustable Base Performance:

I did not test the Avocado mattress on the base but it the pillowtop version will bend some if you want to elevate a little.  If you want to elevate more than a little I would suggest the thinner option which will bend easier on the base.
